Havana, Cuba: For the first time, Cuba is hosting the Congress of Geospatial Sciences, Space Climate and Disaster Risk, as part of the XIII International Convention on Environment and Development that takes place here today virtually, Prensa Latina publishes.

Rudy Montero Mata, director of the Institute of Geophysics and Astronomy and president of the event, declared that the holding of two symposia within past conventions with important technical exchanges and dissemination of contributions to that science demanded the need to convene the Congress, which will conclude tomorrow.

Montero Mata specified that they have 127 presentations which will address, among other topics, science related to disaster risk reduction, hazard and vulnerability studies of the entire country, the latter applied within and outside the country under agreements National and international.

‘In Cuba, these studies have been carried out since 2007. There is a very wide experience now in new methodological tools that give us greater precision in the processes of determining the dangers, of novel incorporations to the social dimension of vulnerability ‘, he commented.

He highlighted other investigations on risks of geological and sanitary origin with a single health approach such as epidemics, epizootics (animals) and epiphytes (plants), as well as Covid-19 and its impact in Cuba.

The congress will be an appropriate space to address space sciences from health, telecommunications, monitoring and alerting related to phenomena developed in the atmosphere, for example, the proximity of objects to the Earth.

Likewise, they carry out a workshop in parallel to the congress related to migrations in the face of the effects of climate change, the phenomena and dangers of disasters and environmental degradation.

That appointment, he added, will serve to expose experiences on the adaptation of communities to those situations with projects such as coastal resilience in the Sabana-Camagüey ecosystem (center), led by that institute, the carzo study, among others.

Contributing to sustainable development, raising the perception of risk in our populations, as well as evaluating challenges and projections in which the scientific community and different sectors of society will be inserted, are the objectives of the congress, he concluded.
