Actions in Cuba against Covid-19 after the outbreak of the pandemic.

Havana, Cuba: Cuban health authorities intensify actions today to confront Covid-19, after the increase in positive patients in August, the one with the most cases in the country since the start of the pandemic, Prensa Latina publishes.

As explained the day before by the director of Epidemiology of the island’s Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Francisco Durán, in six months of the disease in the national territory, the month of August registered 1,432 positive patients for the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes the disease, and September is expected to end with the highest number of infected people.

In just 15 days in September, the country accumulates 738 cases with the coronavirus and 11 deaths, he added.

Durán said that, by the end of the month, the figure should be the highest in the entire stage of the pandemic in the largest of the Antilles.

In addition, he stressed that the fatality until the 15th of this month is 1.49 percent, higher than that registered in June (1.13), July (0.36), and even August with 0.56 percent.

During the six months in which Cuba has confirmed cases of Covid-19, the periods with the highest number of deaths were April and May, with 58 and 19 cases, and a fatality of 4.38 and 3.47 percent, respectively.

“In those first months, the pandemic was just beginning in the country and we still did not have all the knowledge about the disease”, Durán said.

He also stressed that the island’s authorities are working hard to contain the spread of the virus, but the situation has a high epidemiological complexity due to the dispersion in the number of cases in territories such as Havana and Ciego de Ávila, which are currently the most affected by the pandemic.

During the meeting this Wednesday of the temporary work group of the Government to confront Covid-19, chaired by President Miguel Díaz-Canel, the Minister of Public Health, José Ángel Portal, reported that on Wednesday they closed two events of transmission in the West, but they opened two more in Havana.

Meanwhile, the central province of Ciego de Ávila has the highest incidence rate of Covid-19 in Cuba during the last 15 days, as well as a high dispersion of SARS-CoV-2, present in its 10 municipalities.

This territory accumulates 216 infected and is where the most deaths are reported after the re-outbreak of the disease in the country.

At midnight this Tuesday, Cuba reported 73 new cases of Covid-19, which has accumulated 4,876 since March.

On the island, 109 people have died from this disease, while another 4,131 recovered.

Until this Tuesday, a thousand 783 people were kept under clinical-epidemiological surveillance: 62 under surveillance, one thousand 87 suspects and 634 confirmed active cases.

In all molecular biology laboratories in the country, 508,224 real-time PCR tests have been studied since the start of the pandemic.
