Mayabeque, Cuba: In Madruga, the production of honey from Melipona bees has a leading role at Finca La Esperanza, owned by farmer Lázaro Rafael Fundora, cooperative member of the Nelson Fernández Credit and Services Cooperative (CCS).

“Melipona bees are in their best season. This is the time when they have enough food. Mango and lemon are blooming, coffee is beginning to bloom”, Lázaro Rafael Fundora explained.

In the production of honey and pollen, this farmer defines his objective which is not only to produce honey, but to pollinate his flowers.

The honey production of this type of bees is less than that of the honey bee, so their exploitation is controlled.
