Geneva: Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted today at the UN Human Rights Council the return of the United States to this multilateral forum, where his speech included Washington’s traditional aggressiveness towards several countries, Prensa Latina publishes.
On the third day of the high-level segment of the Council in its 46th session, the official insisted that the northern nation is back to international organizations, from which the now former President Donald Trump withdrew with his position marked by unilateralism.
In this regard, he assured via videoconference that the new administration, led by Joe Biden, will bet on focusing its foreign policy on democracy and human rights as essential instruments for peace and stability.
Blinken announced the United States’ candidacy to occupy a seat on the Council in the period 2022-2024 and shortly thereafter called for the removal of item 7, dedicated to the situation of human rights in Palestine and from the 47-member state body’s agenda other Arab territories occupied by Israel.
The US Secretary of State also used the forum to threaten Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba with accountability, as well as to pronounce accusations against Russia, China, Syria, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and other countries.
In his speech, Blinken pointed out that defending human rights must start at home and ‘America is not perfect’, recognizing the discrimination in his country against people of color, which he considered victims of systemic racism and injustice economical.
