Fernando Lugo: 'Prensa Latina has become an informational trench in defense of the truth and the sovereignty of Cuba and our peoples.'

Asunción: The former president of Paraguay Fernando Lugo (2008-2012) congratulated the Prensa Latina agency today, which will celebrate his 62nd anniversary on Wednesday.

In his Twitter profile, Lugo expressed his congratulations “to all those who are part of the historic agency, which ?has become an informational trench in defense of the truth and the sovereignty of Cuba and our peoples”.

Prensa Latina was created on June 16, 1959 as a result of Operation Truth, almost six months after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution led by Fidel Castro.

Its first General Director, Argentine Jorge Ricardo Masetti, called on his professionals to be objective but not impartial.

Masetti and numerous Cuban and Latin American journalists perceived the need to create their own news agency by then, in his words, “to break that monopoly of public opinion that the North American agencies had.”

Among the promoters of the founding of this news medium at the service of the truth was also the Heroic Guerrilla Ernesto Che Guevara, who proposed calling it Prensa Latina.
