Moscow: Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Thursday considered the Geneva summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Joseph Biden positive, although he acknowledged that expectations were not high, Prensa Latina publishes.
‘But now we can say, based on the assessment of the president himself, that the summit passed with a plus sign,’ the Presidency press secretary told Ekho Moskvy radio station.
The spokesman stressed that during the meeting, the two presidents could ‘frankly state their positions and understand, more or less, where they can interact and where this interaction is not possible at the moment due to discrepancies in concepts.’
Peskov expressed that both leaders issued a joint statement at the end of the summit. ‘Yes, this is a very short text, but this is still a joint statement on strategic stability,’ he said.
According to the Russian politician, the text underlines that Moscow and Washington demonstrated that ‘even in periods of tension they are able to make progress on our shared goals to ensure predictability in the strategic sphere, reduce the risks of armed conflicts and the threat of a nuclear war.’
The statement warns that to achieve these goals, Russia and the United States will soon begin a broad bilateral exchange on strategic security, which will be substantive and energetic.
