Presidential primaries showed strength from Chile's left.

Santiago de Chile: The primaries held in Chile this Sunday with a view to the presidential elections on November 21 today show a triumph of the left, which far exceeded the votes of the right, Prensa Latina publishes.

In what turned out to be the primaries with the highest participation of the three held in this country, the left-wing coalition Approve Dignity, surpassed the official bloc Chile Vamos by more than 205 thousand votes.

But in addition, the two candidates who faced each other within Approve Dignity, Gabriel Boric, who was ultimately the winner, and Daniel Jadue, individually achieved more votes than the winner of Chile Vamos, Sebastián Sichel, former Minister of the government of Sebastián Piñera.

Breaking all the forecasts of polls and political analysts, Gabriel Boric, 35, a member of the Democratic Revolution party, was chosen as a candidate from Chile’s left in the primaries with a view to the November presidential elections.

After counting the Electoral Service just over 98 percent of the voting tables, Boric, supported by the Democratic Revolution, Social Convergence and Common parties, reached one million 16 thousand 347 votes for 60.3 percent.

His opponent, Daniel Jadue, supported by the Chile Digno command, which brings together the Communist Party and the Social Green Regionalist Federation, won 667,857 votes for 39.6 percent.

After knowing the results, both Boric and Jadue highlighted the need for the unity of all party forces for profound changes in Chile to achieve a government that is capable of giving prominence to the people, organized civil society and more power to the regions.

Boric made it clear that the left-wing I Approve Dignity coalition “is not simply an electoral alliance, but forged in social struggles and mobilizations” since the October 2019 revolt, but also long before.

On his part, Jadue called on his followers to “work without a doubt and without pause” so that this platform displaces the right of power and builds a country that exceeds the neoliberal model.

Almost three million 138 thousand voters attended this consultation, a very remarkable figure because according to the regulations, only the militants of the parties registered in the primaries as well as the rest of the population without any affiliation were summoned to the polls.

On the other hand, those affiliated to the political formations that did not register candidates before the Electoral Service, among others, the Socialist, Christian Democracy, Humanist, For Democracy, and Radical parties could not vote.
