Port-au-Prince: The death toll from the most recent earthquake in Haiti rose to 1,419 and more than 6,900 injured in four departments of the country, the Civil Protection Directorate confirmed today, Prensa Latina reports.
Most of the deceased and injured were registered in the South department with 1,133, another 162 in Grand Anse, 122 in Nippes, and two in Northwest, indicated the still partial balance.
The agency also reported that more than 84,000 houses were partially or totally destroyed, the highest number in the Grand Anse department, where more than 1,64 injured were also recorded.
Several rescue units moved to the disaster areas, where many people still sleep in the streets for fear of aftershocks reported by seismological services.
The scenario is complicated by the arrival of Tropical Storm Grace, which brings heavy rains and thunderstorms, and whose effects have already begun to be felt in the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Civil Protection increased the alert status to orange with the warning of floods, electrical storms and significant accumulations of rain.
The instance asked citizens to follow the instructions, not to cross swollen rivers and to evacuate if they reside in risk areas, while rescue work continues in the areas affected by the earthquake.
At least 65 tons of humanitarian aid arrived in the country since Sunday night, coming from Venezuela, Mexico and Chile, and these shipments are expected to increase in the coming days. The authorities asked that both governments and non-governmental organizations coordinate assistance through the Ministry of Planning, so that it can be transferred to the regions with the most damage.
