Caracas: The indigenous peoples of Venezuela will go to the polls today to elect, according to their customs, their representatives in the country’s regional legislative assemblies and municipal councils, Prensa Latina publishes.

A total of 74 voting centers will be operational in the state demarcations of Amazonas, Anzoátegui, Apure, Bolívar, Delta Amacuro, Monagas, Sucre and Zulia for the development of the process, the main rector of the National Electoral Council (CNE) Tania D´ Amelio informed.

In accordance with the special regulations for indigenous communities, a total of 69 councilors and eight regional legislators will be elected representing the original ethnic groups settled in the aforementioned state demarcations.

Last September, the CNE approved the Definitive Electoral Registry of Indigenous Communities and Organizations, in which 4,334 spokespersons are empowered to elect their representatives to the legislative councils and municipal councils on November 26.

According to what is established in the special regulations to regulate the election of indigenous representation, the process will be carried out under the nominal modality in popular assemblies in accordance with the uses, traditions and customs of those populations, the highest electoral body specified in a press release.

Last November 21, more than eight million Venezuelans – 42 percent of the voter registry – went to the polls to elect the 23 governors and 335 mayors of the country, in addition to the members of the regional legislative assemblies and municipal councils.
