Mayabeque, Cuba: Specialists from the Risk Management Center in Güines carry out vulnerability studies aimed at identifying the main dangers that affect the territory, determining these and estimating risks, which constitute a tool for local government decision-making.

According to the specialist Carlos Sotolongo “disasters caused by natural and technological risks affect millions of people each year, but a large part of their impact can be reduced through proactive measures and planning.”

For his part, the head of the section of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of the Republic of Cuba (CITMA in Spanish) in Güines, Alfonso Núñez, said that this is a day to convene people and communities to reduce risks in addition to carry out preventive actions to strengthen their capacities in this matter.

This year the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is focused on “International cooperation for developing countries to reduce the risk and losses from disasters,” Sotolongo said.

He also highlighted the importance of implementing best practices in vulnerable areas to minimize the impact of natural, technological and sanitary losses.
