In favor of local self-sufficiency.

Mayabeque, Cuba: The workers of the La Victoria garden (organopónicos), in Bejucal, diversify productions and contribute to local self-sufficiency.

During the months of confinement, planting and harvesting work increased, due to the existing need in the territory.

The head of the organopónico, Yoel Tamayo, says that one of the great challenges is to obtain different types of crops throughout the year.

To achieve this, they use the seeds of their own existing products to plant new ones. In this way they do not depend on the raw materials supplied by the cooperative.

The sale to the population is prioritized and they make donations to the La Estrella Provincial Isolation Center, located in Bejucal.

Locals can buy more than eight items, including condiments and vegetables.

According to Tamayo, in the cold season they make around 15 varieties available to the people.
